Adverbs and adverbial phrases
Play: adverbs
Adverbs are important parts of
speech in Romanian. If you want to use an adverb into a sentence, you
can place the adverb in front of the verb or after the verb. Its
position is not fixed.
Example
Acum
am de scris un email (Now I have to write an email) or
Am de scris un email acum. (I have to write an email now)
Usual adverbs in Romanian
acum = engl.
now
aici = engl.
here
acolo = engl.
there
ieri = engl.
yesterday
alaltăieri =
engl. the day before yesterday
astăzi (azi)
= engl. today
mâine =
engl. tomorrow
poimâine =
engl. the day after tomorrow
mereu /întotdeauna = engl. always
niciodată =
engl. never
uneori =
engl. sometimes
Adverbial phrases
în fiecare zi
= engl. every day
în fiecare dimineață = engl. every morning
în fiecare seară
= engl. every evening
acum 3 zile (cu 3
zile în urmă) = engl. three days ago
săptămâna aceasta
(asta) = engl. this week
anul acesta (ăsta)
= engl. this year
săptămâna trecută
= engl. last week
anul trecut =
engl. last year
săptămâna
viitoare / următoare = engl. next week
anul viitor /
următor = engl. next year
Remarks
The adverbial phrase “în
fiecare zi” is used only when it expresses a time point.
Ex.: Merg la
piață în fiecare zi (I go to the market every day).
If we have a sentence like “Every day
is beautiful”, the Romanian translation is:
Fiecare zi este
frumoasă,
because “every day” (“fiecare
zi”) is the subject of our sentence.
In this case, we don't use the
preposition “în” in front of
the phrase.
The rule is available for all the
similar phrases (în fiecare dimineață
– every morning, în fiecare seară
– every evening, în fiecare an –
every year).
The difference between the phrases
“săptămâna trecută / viitoare”
and “anul trecut / viitor”
is the following: “săptămâna” is
a feminine noun and “anul” is a
masculine noun. In Romanian, the first word of a phrase is usually
the noun. If the noun is masculine/feminine, the adjective will be
in the masculine / feminine form as well. In our case, “trecută
/ viitoare” is feminine and
“trecut / viitor”
is masculine.
Exercise:
Write sentences using the following adverbs
and phrases:
acum
(now), mâine (tomorrow), în
fiecare zi (every day), săptămâna
viitoare (next week).
